Max Brooks’ book about a U.N. employee interviewing survivors of a world wide zombie outbreak is one of the best zombie books ever written. It’s an emotionally charged look at how the world would deal with a mass zombie attack and a glimpse at the social and economic machinations of such an experience. It’s a fantastic read and goes well beyond being a simple horror/sci-fi book. And now, it’s being made into a movie.
Zombie Disappointment
The movie is set to star Brad Pitt as the U.N. employee, and that’s about as true to the book as it seems it’s going to get. In typical Hollywood fashion, the plot of the movie is only tenuously connected to the plot of the book. It seems Brad Pitt’s character is racing around the world in a desperate effort to save everyone. Which means it has the same plot as G.I. Joe, only with zombies instead of Cobra.

The Baroness could eat my brains any day.
To say this is a “tweaking” of the story is a vast understatement. In the book, the U.N. employee isn’t a hero. He’s a chronicler of an amazing catastrophe that spanned the globe and affected every single person on earth, from the Los Angeles to the jungles of Africa. Now he’s a reluctant hero who (probably) ends up with the girl.

"Brad! I love you Brad! Why won't you look at me?"
This is typical Hollywood bullshit. It’s bad enough they have to resort to making movies about board games (looking at you Battleship), but now they’re once again taking a fantastic book and completely destroying it. It’s not like it would have been hard to stick to the documentary style of the book either. District 9 was a fantastic documentary style movie, and the format would have worked brilliantly for a movie about zombies.
Brains. Shaken, Not Stirred
If this movie is able to maintain the social commentary of the book, I’ll shut the hell up and print a retraction. But it seems all too likely that Hollywood is merely pumping out a movie to capitalize on the popularity of the book and the zombie movement in general. Hell, the director has never even done a horror movie. His big claim to fame is Quantum of Solace.

I would go see a zombie Bond movie though...
While the movie is treading on thin ice, who knows, maybe it WILL be as good as the book and all of our fears are unfounded. More likely, it will be one of the worst movies of 2012. You’re probably better off reading the book.
