They just hired debt collection agencies to make them a few bucks before they tucked tail and ran. Fuck Hollywood Video, they could have stuck around like Blockbuster, but never advertised, or promoted their sales out-of-store. They also never started an online service. I called the collection agency and they stated "the legal successor (Hollywood Video) knows these dates are old so they will offer you a 50% discount or you can dispute and they (the collection agency) will send the dispute back to HOllywood Video. If I am to receive another letter then Hollywood Video did not agree with my dispute and I am to pay the full amount" That's BS because half of the movies I never rented and if I owed so much money in 2009 why were they still allowing me to rent in 2010 and no one ever told me that I had late fees when I rented a movie.
