Thank the Lord of Light, something actually happened this week! The past few episodes of Game of Thrones have been dwindling in action, with no real plot progression. But finally things changed and we can see the wheels in motion toward what should be an interesting season finale. Sadly, we’ll have to wait another two weeks in suspense just for episode nine to come, so let’s focus on what happened this week.

‘Tis the season for royal weddings, so that means drama will naturally be involved. Tyrion is wed to Sansa, but the two never “seal the deal,” since he gets drunk after two cups of wine and she’s disgusted by him anyway. (Shea’s not too upset about it.) Joffrey threatens to rape Sansa, something I’m surprised he hasn’t done already, and when Margaery makes the mistake of calling Cersei “sister,” the queen regent threatens to kill off the entire Tyrell House.

Gee, the Lannisters sure are a charming clan, aren’t they?

Daenerys’ plans to win back the Iron Throne involve overtaking slaver cities, the next of which is Yunkai. Full of well-armed and overly pompous men, Yunkai is the home to an army of soldiers known as the Second Sons, who fight strictly for gold and not honor. Their debates over fighting for the Khaleesi don’t last long when one of the leaders turns out to be a character I’d hoped to see again from the last season – someone I believe to be one of the Faceless Men, who originally saved Arya and helped her escape King’s Landing.

If my theory is true and Daario Naharis turns out to be Jaqen H’ghar with a new face, their sexual tension will surely prove to be interesting once Sir Jorah Moront finds out just how dangerous of a man he is. Can’t wait for that drama to unfold.

Melisandre’s return to Stannis proves unlucky for Gendry, but we already knew that’d happen. Much like how last week’s episode involved Theon Greyjoy going through some serious sexual deception, what began as Gendry thinking he was about to get it on with Melisandre actually ended up with her sticking leeches all over him while Stannis and the newly freed Davos watched. (He was stuck in some memorable places, too – anybody seen Stand by Me?)

The last scene of the episode is the only one that bears witness to the cruelty of winter. Samwell Tarly and Gilly try to keep warm and find a suitable name for her baby boy, but The Godswood offers little protection. The two find themselves face-to-face with the leader of the White Walkers, who Gilly knows has come to claim the baby. This might be the first time we’ve seen Sam do some seriously good quick thinking – he stabs the White Walker with the dragonglass dagger from the Fist of the First Men, turning him to a poof of dust.

I guess now we know what dragonglass does.

Iron Man 3 is still the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, however, and in its opening weekend, it took in $174.1 million, and it’s tops there as well. Still, $70 million is way more than I made this weekend, so kudos.

Keeping the Secret

Perhaps most impressive of all about Star Trek Into Darkness‘ release is the fantastic job the studio has done in keeping the ONE BIG SECRET about the identity of the movie’s principal villain. Even as Benedict Cumberbatch has been out making the rounds doing press and the rest of the cast has been talking up Star Trek Into Darkness to the media as well, there have been almost no slip-ups and the studio has had it on lockdown the whole time. In the Internet age, that’s unbelievable.

You won’t find any spoilers here either, sorry. If you want to know against whom the Enterprise crew is struggling this time around, you’re just going to have to go see the movie like everyone else who contributed to that $70 million opening weekend.

It’s been seven years since Fox canceled what was at that time the best comedy on television — Arrested Development — and ever since, the show’s cult following has grown to massive proportions. Thanks to repeat DVD viewings, fans have memorized lines, uncovered intricate hidden jokes and plumbed the depths of each of the three seasons’ utterly brilliant writing and performances.

Filming began for Arrested Development Season 4 last August, and on May 26 — less than two weeks from today! — Arrested Development will make its triumphant return by premiering the entire 15-episode season simultaneously on Netflix. In addition to being probably the highest-profile show to premiere this way, it’s also just fantastic to have the Bluth family back on television, in whatever form.

The entire principal cast — Jason Bateman, Portia De Rossi, Will Arnett, Jessica Walter, Jeffrey Tambor, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale and David Cross — and even uncredited narrator Ron Howard have signed back on to revive the much-loved and much-misssed series, and a new trailer for Arrested Development Season 4 has made its way online ahead of the May 26 debut of the show. So What Did We Learn?

1. Michael goes to Phoenix (that’s what all that airport stuff in the beginning is about) and at some point starts the Michael Bluth Company.
2. GOB is still unemployed.

5. Lindsay and Tobias’ marital troubles continue.
6. Buster still loves juice.

Yup, everything seems to be in order. This is going to be amazing.

There’s been a lot of role reversal lately in Game of Thrones, and cruel things are happening in Westeros. But that’s normal for a show that’s never short of surprises. Theon is being tortured, Tyrion’s life is unfair, so is Sansa’s. Danaerys is still the ultimate badass, Robb doesn’t really have his head in the game, and I still don’t like Melisandre. Now, on to the surprising things.

It’s been too long since Joffrey’s done anything, torturing whores aside, so grandpa Tywin changes that. The Hand of the King reclaims his title as boss (even though Joffrey won’t admit it, of course) and puts the boy king in his place.

It was only a matter of time until they had some sort of interaction, but I’m surprised it took so long. This is literally the first time both have spoken since Tywin got his title, and Joffrey again proves to be a brat with no control or desire to do much but complain.

It’s sad, but Robb is another character who seems to have just about no place being king. However, he’s positively giddy when he finds out about Talisa’s pregnancy… I give it about an episode or two before he realizes that this means Talisa’s now a target for assassination (because people loved her so much before, right?).

Robb’s in a tough position; people of the south obviously don’t want him to be king, and now even his own men are starting to feel similarly. With a kid added to the equation, he’s going to have to get his priorities in order. Maybe this will make him start actually wanting to sit on the Iron Throne.

Ygritte finds herself wanted by the warg who cut her and Jon loose from the Wall, which surprises her more than it does us. It’s true that, as the warg puts it, Jon is a LOT prettier than him, but he feels that Ygritte should be with another Wildling like herself. He’s determined to convince Ygritte that Jon is a traitor to both sides.

It seems Jon’s a bit too pretty for his own good.

Theon’s torture is brought to a new level when his captor (who is still a mystery to us) sends two whores in to tease him, only to be interrupted and made a eunuch. Poor Theon’s had to deal with physical and psychological torture, but then again, so did Lord Varys. And we all know how he turned out. Having nothing between his legs may just make him a dangerous person — if he survives.

Something tells me she didn’t like being called “mad.”

Daenerys has reversed her attitude a bit: as her capacity for humanity and empathy grows, so does her ruthlessness. It’s an interesting position: the Khaleesi was once a slave, and is now bringing hellfire down on all of the slavers that she finds. And my, oh my, her dragons are sure getting big.

But the worst thing by far was the last scene, where the episode’s title came to life. “Bear and the Maiden Fair” is in fact the song that the Boltons sing while watching Brienne enter an excecution-style ring with nothing but a wooden sword against a grizzly bear. Luckily Jaime rescues her, although not before she’s bloodied with claw marks across her chest.

This makes us not only take another look at Jaime, who has seen a serious reversal since the start of the season, but also feel differently about the men running the North. The Starks were an ideal representation of the North, but the Boltons make us think differently.

The sixth episode of Game of Thrones gave us a bit of breathing room. Fans who’ve seen the last couple of seasons will know that this only means good things. The last few episodes in each season are always the best and most action-packed, so it only makes sense that this week’s didn’t have a whole lot happening. Luckily, a few key scenes held the episode together with interesting dialogue.

Two great (but relatively minor) characters fall victim to their fate this week, leaving poor Gendry to the whims of Melisandre and the Lord of Light (who we learn is also called “the Red God,” the same name Jaqen H’ghar used last season whilst talking to Arya). We know that Melisandre needs him to perform a sacrifice of sorts, but I have faith that Gendry is resourceful enough to escape the Red Witch.

Ros, however, is having a much worse time: she finds herself subject to both Joffrey’s cruelty, and Lord Baelish’s rise to power. Joffrey’s discovery that his key hooker was secretly working for Lord Varys must not have sat well; he made a human target out of her body for his shiny new crossbow.

“Chaos is not a pit. It’s a ladder.”

This horrifying moment gives us a better look at Littlefinger’s thirst for his turn at a climb on the ladder. His calculation is beginning to sink through; I’m glad Baelish ends the episode on such an ominous and threatening vibe. Because of this, we know something big is going to happen soon, perhaps involving his trip to the Aerie.

Jon Snow finds himself taking a more terrifying climb this episode. The massive Wall poses innumerable dangers, all of which face him on his lengthy journey up. He manages to make an enemy out of the warg wildling, who tries to cut Jon and Ygritte loose and kill them both.

Tyrion is faced with the awkwardness of having to tell Sansa that he’ll be wedding her, and in front of his actual girlfriend to boot. Finally, Sansa begins to understand her rare position as the potential key to the North, should her brother fail. It’s a shame that she won’t be able to marry Loras Tyrell, who she’s had her eye on for a while now.

One great thing this episode does is allow us to see the grave circumstances that some characters are in. Even Tywin seems to have met his match; by talking with Lady Olenna he can see that he is not the only elder with a sharp tongue and value, both monetary and otherwise.

We already know just how far Jaime’s position has brought him, but now he finds himself unable to save Brienne from what looks (in the preview for next week’s episode, at least) to be another unfortunate fate. Those who were once safe are no longer protected; all we can do now is speculate.

1. Man of Steel

That last trailer was so well received, how could this movie bomb, right? Anyone remember Kick-Ass (though that film’s sequel is coming out this year)? Or Cloud Atlas? Or Scott Pilgrim vs. The World? Superman just has limited appeal to today’s audiences and I’m not sure one trailer will be enough to change that. If Zack Snyder’s latest is as good as advertised, this will be a major hit nearing $300 million. If not, low $200s is going to be its best case scenario.

2. The Heat

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy plus Paul Feig (the director of Bridesmaids) has sleeper hit written all over it. Again, this one will be related to quality. If it’s really funny, expect a Bridesmaids-like run to $130-150 million.

3. Pacific Rim

Guillermo del Toro’s latest looks like every nerd’s and young boy’s dream. Giant robots. Big aliens. Lots of fighting. This one looks like it could be the surprise of the summer. That being said, will audiences other than young males respond? If not, it’s doomed to a $120-140 million take.

4. The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann’s latest boasts a strong cast in Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. But the second weekend in May has not been kind to movies: just ask Kingdom of Heaven, Mission: Impossible 3, Speed Racer or last summer’s Dark Shadows. Coming out between two of the summer’s most anticipated (Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness) doesn’t help its cause. Still, Baz Luhrmann’s movies can play well over the long term. And this one could be counter-programming against the action and kids’ movies coming out during May. Regardless, it’s tough to see this going too much higher than $100 million.

5. Epic

The first big animated film to hit theaters Memorial Day weekend. Animated action films have a tough time compared to animated comedies — still, this one looks like it could be, ahem, epic enough to draw in a large audience. One has to wonder if the similarities to FernGully and the sheer competition with more anticipated sequels coming out will leave this one in the dark. Estimate: $130-150 million.

Just about everyone has a headbanger in their life. Someone you’re related to, someone you work with, it even might be you. (If it is, you probably already know 6 other Black Sabbath songs besides “Iron Man.”)

But it’s a great big world out there, and though sometimes metalheads have a hard time believing it, NOT EVERYONE listens to Black Sabbath. In light of Iron Man 3 being released today as the latest in the Avengers saga, here’s a quick list of six Black Sabbath songs other than “Iron Man” for beginners to dig into:

1. “Paranoid”

This is the all-time Sabbath classic. Even more than “Iron Man,” “Paranoid” is their bread and butter — a quick groover about feeling mentally deranged. It kind of became the blueprint for heavy metal, and if there’s one Black Sabbath song you should know, this is it.

2. “Into the Void”

In case the cover didn’t clue you in, “Into the Void” comes from the album Master of Reality. It was their third record, released in 1971, and probably their best with the original lineup, whatever anyone might say to in favor of the first or second.

3. “Never Say Die”

It’s an unwritten rule in heavy metal that if you’re gonna wear the t-shirt, you have to know where it comes from. Tony Stark’s Black Sabbath shirt is a design for the tour they did in 1978 in support of the album “Never Say Die.” The title track (above) is upbeat and fiercely catchy.

4. “Sabbra Cadabra”

A common misconception about heavy metal is that it’s all dark and nobody has any fun. “Sabbra Cadabra” is about being in love with a pretty girl and the first words in the song are “Feel so good, feel so fine.” Take that, stereotypes!

5. “The Wizard”

This one there’s no real reason to include other than it’s a blues song, with harmonica, about a wizard, and that’s awesome. Some songs signify bigger ideas, and some are just blues songs about wizards. It’s its own excuse for being.

6. “God is Dead?”

Gotta keep it modern, right? Black Sabbath has a new album coming out in June called “13,” and the lead single from it is “God is Dead?” It’s a little lengthy, but features a classic Sabbath riff and Ozzy’s trademark vocals.
