Ratings and Recommendations Help
Star Colors
There are three types of star ratings:
- Green Stars
- Green stars display your predicted rating. This is the star rating that we think you'd give this movie based upon how you rated other movies.
- Purple Stars
- Purple stars display your rating. This is the star rating that you gave the movie.
- Yellow Stars
- Yellow stars display the community rating. This is the average star rating that members gave the movie.
How to Rate Movies
My Hollywood Video members can give any movie their own rating. Once you've signed in, move your mouse over the stars for the movie you want to rate until the appropriate number of stars are highlighted. Click once and the stars will display your rating. To change your rating, simply repeat this process. Visit the Rated Movies page to see the movies that you've rated.
While everyone has his or her own standards for rating movies, we suggest:
- X = Hated it
- 1 star = Did not like it
- 2 stars = Almost into it
- 3 stars = Liked it
- 4 stars = Really enjoyed it
- 5 stars = Loved it
You also have the option to choose “Not Interested”, and on the expanded movie view, “Haven't Seen It Yet”. Choosing “Not Interested” will make sure that we don't offer that movie as a recommendation or ask you to rate it. Checking “Haven't Seen It Yet” will remove it from your Rate Movies page.
Reasons to Rate Movies
There are several good reasons to give your personal ratings to movies. These include:
- Your Scorecard
- First of all, rating movies is a great way to keep track of how much you liked each movie you've seen. You can avoid seeing movies you didn't like again, and you'll remember those movies that you loved and might want to see again. The Rated Movies page saves all of your ratings.
- Your Predicted Ratings
- Based on the ratings you've given, we use technology to generate personalized predicted ratings for other movies. The more movies you rate, the more accurately we'll be able to estimate how much you'll like other movies.
- Your Recommendations
- Similarly, our system uses your star ratings to pick movies from our extensive movie database that we think you'll really enjoy. The Your Recommendations page displays our personalized movie picks selected just for you. Again, the more movies you rate, the more accurately we can pick movies that match your tastes.
- You're the Critic
- The star rating that you give a movie also becomes part of its community rating. Your scores will help steer members away from sub-par movies and let them know what movies they need to see.
Searching for Movies to Rate
- Enter the title, actor, director, or keyword that you'd like to search for into the search box at the top of any page on our site.
- Select the appropriate search category from the dropdown menu.
- Click the go button.
- Rate the movie.
Your Recommendations
The Your Recommendations page is a list of movies that—based on how you've rated other movies—we think you'll enjoy. Innovative technology analyzes the star ratings you've provided to figure out what your movie tastes are. Once you've rated several movies, we'll be able to start suggesting other movies from our extensive movie catalog that you might enjoy. The more movies you give ratings to, the more accurate our picks for you will be.
Custom View Options
There are several ways that you can customize the lists for your recommendations or movies to rate. For customized lists, use these tools:
- You can change the number of movies displayed on the screen by clicking either “15 per page” or “90 per page” at the bottom right of the page.
- You can view details about the movie on your list by clicking “Show Details” at the top of the page. Click on “Hide Details” to view a condensed version of the lists.
- You can sort lists by Star Rating, Title, or MPAA Rating (G, PG, PG-13, R, and NR). Click on any of these in the “Display By:” at the top of the list. The list will automatically reorder itself.
Printing Ratings and Recommendations Lists
Select the print command from your browser's file menu. The page will automatically reformat to a printer-friendly version optimized for standard 8½x11 inch paper.
