Charlize Theron Could Join Robert Downey Jr in PTA’s ‘Inherent Vice’

Back in 2010, we heard that Paul Thomas Anderson was attached to direct a film adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s book Inherent Vice, a kidnapping mystery about a pot-smoking private eye that takes place in 1969 Los Angeles. Robert Downey Jr. was attached to star, and Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison came through with funding, but Anderson ended up doing The Master first. Now that his time with Freddie Quell and Lancaster Dodd has come to an end, Inherent Vice is next on PTA’s directing slate, and a new report from Showbiz 411 says that Charlize Theron (among others) could be coming along for the trippy ride. Downey will play a stoner detective named Doc Sportello, and while there’s no official word on who Theron would play as of yet, I’m guessing she’ll be Sportello’s ex-girlfriend, who throws the whole story in motion when she comes to Doc with a story about her …
