Weekend Box Office — ‘2 Guns’ at Number 1

Action comedy ‘2 Guns’ tops the box office in its first weekend of release!

Secret CIA banks, millions of dollars, explosions, Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington — is there anything else you really need to know about 2 Guns before you say, “Alright, what time is it playing?”

Also, this happens in slow motion.

Washington and Wahlberg star in the adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, playing an undercover DEA agent and a criminal, respectively, who get roped into a caper that runs much deeper than it first seems. How do they solve the problem? Well, with two guns, of course.

The full weekend breakdown was an interesting one, so here’s a look:

Weekend Box Office: Aug. 2-4, 2013

  1. 2 Guns – $27.4 million
  2. The Wolverine – $21.7 million
  3. The Smurfs 2 – $18.2 million
  4. The Conjuring – $13.7 million
  5. Despicable Me 2 – $10.4 million

We made all that money? Well, we must be quite the draw.

At least they’ll be able to afford more guns for the sequel…

A $27.4 million pull for 2 Guns isn’t bad by any means. It was enough to give it the top spot, but it’s hardly the summer’s biggest first-week take. Even last week, The Wolverine took number one with $55 million, just over twice as much than 2 Guns.

Still, they made an awful lot of money.

But when there’s a lack of competition, it can work to the advantage of a movie like 2 Guns, which probably wouldn’t have beat out The Wolverine or The Conjuring in their first weeks, but now that they’ve been around for a while, did well in this vacation-prone weekend.

The toughest spot is still to come

2 Guns will have stiffer competition this weekend, as both the Matt Damon sci-fi epic Elysium and the animated Cars semi-sequel Planes open to what’s sure to be smash numbers that could finally knock Despicable Me 2 and The Conjuring out of the top 5.
